Wheeler Park to Close Again This Winter

3221As it did in 2015, the Wheeler Dog Park will close for the winter months. Recreation and Parks had hoped that partitioning the park and keeping only one side open at a time would allow the closed side to recover from happy, active dog feet. Unfortunately the rainy spring made it hard to get good grass coverage last summer, and continued heavy dog use has taken its toll on both sides of the partitioned park. One side is now a mud pit, and the reserve side will quickly degrade to a similar state if it is opened. In order not to have to close the park during the summer, Director Tony Collins and his staff have decided to temporarily close the entire park now.

Director Collins asks residents to respect the closure signs and allow Wheeler Park to rest until his department determines that the lawn is ready. We love Wheeler Park, and we know that you do, too; the Harrison West Society invites you to walk your dog and get to know your neighborhood better during the closure. You can also visit the dog park at Scioto Audubon Metro Park south of the downtown if your dog needs more strenuous exercise.

Recreation and Parks is hoping to reopen Wheeler Park in spring 2016. We will continue to post updates as they become available.

Thank you for your continued patience!
