Resident Profile – Matthew Hall, 44

Matthew Hall - Harrison West

Matthew Hall grew up in New Philadelphia, Ohio before moving to Columbus to attend The Ohio State University. He earned a degree in Finance at OSU, which he’s put to ample use at Huntington Bank for the past 25 years. His career began with a job at the bank’s New Philadelphia branch the summer between his freshman and sophomore years of college. His mom worked there and helped convince the branch manager to hire Matt as a part-time teller during the break. When he returned to college in the fall, he transferred to a Columbus branch and began to work his way up. Today, he is the senior vice president of business segment sales and training, a position he has held for the last two years. His job entails managing the sales support and training team for Huntington. Matt’s teams are responsible for building and driving sales processes and solutions, developing training curricula and delivering training to the majority of Huntington’s business segments.

Matt has lived on W. Second Ave. for two years. Prior to becoming a Harrison West resident, he lived for three years in the Renaissance Condominiums downtown followed by a short stint in Pittsburgh. When he returned to Columbus, Matt knew that he wanted to live in or near the Short North, but he also wanted to be far enough away from High Street to avoid its traffic. When he toured a house on Second Ave., Matt knew he was home.

Harrison West is Matt’s favorite area of Columbus because it incorporates a socioeconomic mix of residents and includes unique homes and properties. The spectrum in the neighborhood runs the gamut from the newly built Harrison Park development with its half-million dollar houses to government-subsidized Section 8 housing. The broad range gives our urban neighborhood a great mix of people, a lot of whom Matt considers to be his friends.

Matt is an active (and single!) guy. When he’s not working at the bank you might find him working out at Urban Active or cycle training on the bike path. For a second year, he rode Pelotonia as a member of Huntington’s team, where he joined more than 700 other riders from the bank (and more than 6,000 riders total) pedaling to raise money for cancer research. Matt loves to ride his bike around in the open country. He will ride 20 to 30 miles at a stretch on the country roads around Granville, one of his favorite biking locales. He is an “every Saturday” shopper at the North Market and helps create the policies and programs to guide it by serving as an active member of the board of directors and by regularly volunteering at market events. He is also a huge OSU fan. He attends every home football game and usually one away game—he has even been to two national championship games. Matt also holds season tickets for men’s basketball and frequently attends women’s basketball games as well—always impeccably dressed in scarlet and grey. Oh, and did I mention that his five-year-old puggle is named Bucki (pronounced “Buckeye”)?

Matt’s favorite Harrison West haunt is Caffe’ Apropos, which conveniently serves both wine and coffee. He avails himself of the wine for carryout and the coffee at the café when he’s working or socializing with friends. His other favorite places in the Short North include Level Dining Lounge, Rigsby’s Kitchen, Basi Italia and Mouton. When he’s feeling indulgent, he stops by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams for a scoop or a pint of their renowned dairy treat. The next time you see Matt walking Bucki on the streets of Harrison West make sure you say “Hi neighbor!”
