City of Columbus Asks For Residents Input For Safer Bicycling As It Updates Bikeways Plan
The City is conducting a survey of residents to help guide the updating of its Bikeways Plan, the blueprint for future bikeway projects to make Columbus a more bike-friendly city. The survey asks residents for input on how streets can be made safer for bicycling and driving on streets. The survey results will be considered as future bikeways projects are developed. The Bikeways Plan was adopted in 2008.
“We will continue to invest in sharrows, bike lanes, bike racks and other bikeways infrastructure, but the safety of bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists will always be the top priority,” said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “Input from bicyclists, motorists and others through the survey will help us make future bikeways projects safer for cyclists and motorists.”
The update of the Bikeways Plan is being done to incorporate current best practices in bicycling education, encouragement, evaluation and engineering standards.
In 2014, the City will invest $5.6 million in bicycling facilities, including:
- 56 sharrow pavement markings on 1.1 miles of roadway
- 36 bike boulevard pavement markings on 2 miles of roadway
- 1.5 miles of shared-use paths
- 1.3 miles of bike lanes
- 5 miles of bike trails
- 50 bike racks
Under the leadership of Mayor Coleman and City Council, the City has invested in the following bicycle facilities, resources and bicycling events since the Bikeways Plan’s adoption in 2008:
- 209 Share the Road signs
