Legendary Memphis Soul Man to Kickoff Rhythm on the River Season

Columbus Recreation and Parks Department welcomes legendary Memphis soul man, Booker T. Jones to Bicentennial Park on Fri., June 14 for a free performance as part of the Rhythm on the River series. The evening of music will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Phil Clark & The Soul, followed by a live performance by Booker T. Jones at 9 p.m. Food and beverages will be available for purchase beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Booker T. Jones is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and arguably the most famous Hammond B3 player in history. As leader of the legendary Booker T. & the MG’s, this pillar of soul music collaborated with Otis Redding, Albert King, Eddie Floyd and Sam and Dave during his tenure at the renowned Stax Records label. Since then, Booker has lent his trademark keyboard chops to artists as diverse as Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and produced classic albums such as Willie Nelson’s triple platinum hit Stardust and Bill Withers’ Just As I Am featuring the hit song “Ain’t No Sunshine.” www.BookerT.com

Rhythm on the River features an eclectic series of touring artists, local musicians and arts organizations. Produced by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, the 2013 series will present ten free outdoor performances in Bicentennial Park. In addition to Rhythm on the River, Bicentennial Park is also home to FountainSide presented by American Electric Power and Sunny 95 (94.7 FM).
