Resident Profile – Anthony Scarpelos and Ken McRoy

Anthony Scarpelos and Ken McRoyHW: What is your full name and its origin, or how was it given to you? Are you named after anyone? Do you have any nicknames?

Anthony George Scarpelos and Kenneth Philip McRoy. Anthony is named after his Greek maternal grandmother Antonia. Ken is named after a navy buddy of his father and his uncle.

HW: How old are you?

We are both 48.

HW: Where do you live in Harrison West? Do you own your house or rent?

We own a home in The Homes at Harrison Park.

HW: How long have you lived in Harrison West?

We moved to Harrison West in August, 2006.

HW: What brought you here (HW) and where did you live before?

We initially moved to Victorian Village in August, 1992 and rehabbed a brick duplex on Wilber Avenue. Longing for more space and less work, we moved to Harrison Park. We love having a new home in our lovely older neighborhood. For us, it’s the best of both worlds.

HW: Where were you born and where did you grow up?

Anthony was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in West Roxbury. Ken was born in Providence, Rhode Island and grew up in Lima, Ohio.

HW: How did you end up in Columbus if you are not from here?

Ken graduated from The Ohio State University and moved to Madison, New Jersey in 1986. We met in New Jersey and had hoped to make it back to Ohio someday. We were able to transfer to Ohio and chose Columbus because both of us love the city and because of its proximity to Lima.

HW: Did you go to college? If so, where and what did you study?

Anthony graduated from The Ohio State University in 1999 with a B.S. in Nursing. Ken graduated from The Ohio State University in 1985 with a B.S. in Finance.

HW: What do you do for a living? How did you end up in that occupation?

We have been flight attendants for the past 26 years. It was the first job for us after college. Neither of us planned on making a career out of it. We met at the airline in 1987 and are able to work the same flights together. We get to enjoy our layovers together all over the country. And no…we don’t get tired of each other!

HW: What do you like to do for fun?

Cooking, gardening, tennis, biking and wine!

HW: What do you like about living in Harrison West?

We love the fact that we can for the most part leave the car in the garage when we’re home. We love the Olentangy River trail, the tennis courts at Goodale Park and the fact that we can walk (or bike) to so many activities and business in the neighborhood. We also like Harrison West for the neighborhood that it is: diverse, friendly and certainly not “cookie cutter.” After traveling for work and on vacations, it’s always good to come back to a place that really feels like home.

HW: What are your favorite places to go out? Do you frequent any of the neighborhood businesses?

We enjoy the neighborhood restaurants. We both like to cook, so we don’t eat out often but we like Nida’s Thai on High, the Rossi and Katalina’s CafĂ© Corner. We had an excellent dinner on the patio at Haiku last night. About the only shopping that we like to do is food shopping. We love the North Market. We have been to many markets in the country and rank the North Market among the best. For fine ingredients, we like North Market Poultry and Game (we refer to it as the Poultry Palace), Bluescreek Farm Meats and Curds and Whey.
