Free Chopin Concert April 13 at Columbus Museum of Art

Nonprofit recital series Sunday at Central will present a concert by renowned classical musicians Gail Niwa (piano) and Luis Biava (cello) performing the works of Frédéric Chopin on Sunday, April 13 at 3:00 p.m. in Columbus Museum of Art’s Cardinal Health Auditorium. Admission is free and guests will have free access to galleries in CMA’s permanent collection.

This hour-long performance, titled “The Heart of Warsaw,” is a journey through Chopin’s treasure trove of masterpieces. It explores his highly distinct style and passion for his native Poland. Pieces to be performed include Polonaise-Fantasie, Opus 30 Mazurkas, C# Minor Nocturne, C# Minor Scherzo and the rarely performed Cello Sonata. In Chopin’s all-too-short life (he died before the age of 40), he produced numerous compositions that are staples in every pianist’s repertoire and remain favorites in the hearts of all classical music lovers.

Gail Niwa
The daughter of professional musicians, Gail Niwa was born in Chicago and made her orchestral debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of eight. She earned her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees on scholarship at the Juilliard School as a student of Adele Marcus. She has performed as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony, the San Luis Obispo Symphony, and the California Philharmonic, as well as with the Utah, Memphis, Fort Wayne, Augusta, Columbus, Reno, Evanston and Grant Park symphonies. In 1991, she became the first woman to win the Gold Medal at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. She also won major prizes in the International Chopin Competition, the Mae Whitaker Competition, and the Washington International Competition. From 1999 to 2001, she served on the faculty of the University of Southern California as an Assistant Professor of Piano. She is currently the pianist in residence with Poeta Musica.

Luis Biava
Luis Biava is principal cellist of the Columbus Symphony. He began studying cello with his uncle, Miguel Uribe, in his native Colombia. He attended the University of Michigan and earned a master’s degree from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Leonard Rose. He has performed with the Knox County Symphony, Greater Columbus Community Orchestra, the New Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra, and throughout Central and South America. He’s a member of the High Street Four quartet and the Canaletto Ensemble, and performs as a chamber musician in Trio Biava-Uribe with his father. Luis is also a conductor, serving as music director of the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, artistic director of the Chamber Music Society of Dublin, and conductor of Camarata and the New Albany Symphony Orchestra.

Sunday at Central is a nonprofit chamber music recital series that was founded in 1994. It offers intimate, personalized traditional chamber music concerts with internationally recognized professional musicians.
