The Community Capital Development Corporation (CCDC) is Ohio’s largest private, non-profit, certified development company. Formed in 1981, it began as an arm of city government intended to access United States Small Business Administration dollars and to put them to use locally. Initially, the CCDC served Columbus exclusively, but it eventually expanded to serve Franklin County and then surrounding counties. Today, it has an additional office in Dayton and is able to offer loans statewide. President and CEO Brad Shimp has been with the CCDC since 1993 and has overseen its move to Michigan Avenue from Chatham Village at Kenny and Ackerman roads in 2001. CCDC purchased its current building from the American Cancer Society (which relocated next door), and in an eight-month process, gutted it, renovated it and upgraded the exterior to create the modern and cleanly landscaped structure that the organization inhabits today. The CCDC home now boasts ten offices and an ample meeting room (which the CCDC makes available to local businesses and organizations during the day, as long as the room is not scheduled for CCDC activities) as well as three additional offices occupied by an affiliated attorney.

The CCDC aids small, healthy and growing Ohio businesses by providing affordable financing for the purchase of real estate and equipment. Often referred to as “brick and mortar” loans, CCDC’s loans are available to all Ohio businesses to fund additions, renovations and the acquisition of existing buildings; construction of new buildings; and purchases of machinery and equipment for manufacturing businesses. The CCDC also manages the city of Columbus’ Working Capital and Real Estate Loan Programs, Franklin County’s Working Capital Loan Program, the Grove City Loan Program and Ohio’s Child Daycare Loan Program. Within Harrison West, the CCDC has helped the Bunn=Minnick Pipe Organ Company, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and Integrated Building Systems (formerly ADC Information Technologies) to purchase their respective properties.

Brad and his staff of nine enjoy their location in Harrison West, which, as Brad points out, is a great neighborhood close to restaurants, the North Market (Brad is a former North Market Development Authority board president) and downtown. Ample, hassle-free parking is available to the organization’s employees and clients. And the CCDC’s location in such a vibrant residential community offers other perks like having Caffe’ Apropos and Katalina’s Café Corner within walking distance up the block, not to mention interesting people-watching as neighborhood dwellers stroll with their dogs down Michigan Avenue.

Having been in the neighborhood for a decade, Brad has watched the neighborhood “grow up” around the CCDC. From the removal of the AC Humko plant and the construction of higher-end residential housing to the renovation and improvement of numerous Harrison West homes (Brad can point them out block by block), development has been ongoing since the CCDC’s arrival. Brad views the relationship between the residential and commercial interests in Harrison West as mutually beneficial; he feels that a strong local community is advantageous to the business community and vice versa.
