Free Concert: Quartet for the End of Time June 4 at the Garden Theater

The Johnstone Fund for New Music will present Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du Temps (Quartet for the End of Time) on Wednesday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Green Room of the Garden Theater. This performance is part of the “New Music Salon at Short North Stage” free concert series, crafted under the artistic direction of Sunday at Central. Seating is limited and is available on a first-come first-served basis.

Quartet for the End of Time will be performed by David Niwa (Acting Associate Concertmaster, The Columbus Symphony and Artistic Director, Sunday at Central); pianist Mariko Kaneda (Faculty, Ohio Wesleyan University); clarinetist David Thomas (Principal Clarinet, The Columbus Symphony); and cellist Pegsoon Whang (Utah Symphony). The piece is considered to be one of the most important of the 20th century. Messiaen composed it while serving as an inmate at a German prisoner of war camp. Sympathetic guards provided him with manuscript paper, pencils, instruments and rehearsal allowances. It premiered at the camp in January of 1941 in front of 400 prisoners, officers, and guards. The work, which was inspired by the Book of Revelation, offers stirring messages about hope, redemption and the spirit of humanity.

The one-hour concert will take place in an appropriately liturgical setting, as the Green Room will be set for Short North Stage’s production of Charles Busch’s comedic play The Divine Sister, which runs from May 29 to June 15. A pre-show casual discussion about Quartet for the End of Time led by Jeremy Glazier (Ohio Dominican University) will be held in the Green Room at 6:30 p.m. A cocktail hour at Stage Left cocktail lounge (next to the theater) will begin at 6:00, and guests are welcome to bring cocktails into the performance.

This performance is recommended for ages 9 and older. The Garden Theater is located at 1187 North High Street in the Short North. Parking is available at a lot just south of the theater and at nearby meters. Free street parking is available after 6:00 p.m. on weekdays on the south side of Fifth Avenue west of High Street around the corner from the theater.

This is the last New Music Salon at Short North Stage concert of the season.
