Business Profile – Caffe' Apropos

Anton Wood, owner of Caffe’ Apropos offered this explanation for the name of his establishment:

“Apropos in Latin means ‘perfect timing,’ and it seemed appropriate for the corner of Third and Michigan in Harrison West six years ago as the neighborhood was turning the corner and gentrifying quickly. It was also perfect timing for me as I was ready to strike out on my own and attempt to realize a dream.”

The concept for Caffe’ Apropos grew out of Anton’s Bavarian heritage—hence the “European Espresso Bar” concept. He hails from Germany where, he tells me, nearly all of the cafés also serve beer or wine. He chose to locate in Harrison West because the area was starting to improve and, in his words, “clean up very nicely.” People who are familiar with the history of the neighborhood have witnessed some fantastic changes in the form of new builds and renovations. Harrison West is becoming a very hip part of Columbus to live and be seen in, and Anton is thrilled with his choice to locate his business in the heart of the neighborhood. He is proud to have brought a small, independently owned enterprise to Harrison West.

“With me,” he points out, “there are no deep pockets or corporate image to adhere too. I am doing it for you. I am always listening to ideas, and we have evolved as part of the community.”

Many of the residents quickly recognized Caffe’ Apropos as a valued amenity, and I believe it’s safe to say that we are thrilled, too!

Anton loves that Harrison West has evolved into a “hip little neighborhood” situated adjacent to the huge new Grandview Yard development that will occupy the site of the former Big Bear warehouse.

“The old Big Bear site will soon be another version of Easton,” he commented, “and this area will really be buzzing. I am hoping this will benefit all of us here.”

He is excited by all of the new construction, the renovations and the influx of residents to Harrison West that he has witnessed in the past half-decade. It is rewarding for him to have recognized the potential of Harrison West and to continue to contribute to the synergy in our neighborhood.
