Short North Tour of Homes & Gardens Celebrates 40 Years

short north tour of homes 2014Since 1974, Short North homeowners have opened their doors to the public for an annual showcase of the neighborhood’s fabulous residences and private gardens. On September 20th and 21st, the tradition will continue with the 40th anniversary edition of the Short North Tour of Homes & Gardens, presented by the Short North Civic Association and presenting sponsor Dooley and Co. Team of Keller Williams Classic Properties.

This year’s tour celebrates the range of exceptional architecture and interior design found in the area, from new builds to historic restorations, out-of-the-way gems to highly prominent locales.

Among the 10 stops are the 19th century, Queen Anne-style home of Elizabeth Segura-Holland – complete with spire-topped tower and antique furnishings – and the expansive, fully renovated residence of Short North Civic Association president and local art collector Jeff Smith. Located adjacent to Goodale Park, it was built in the late 1800s by stone company owner William Fish, who also built the stone pagoda gate at the north entrance to the park.

Guests will have a chance to compare different design sensibilities in similar spaces with stops at two residences in the Dakota Building on N. High Street, and two spaces in the Morehouse building, a former warehouse tucked away on a nearby alley.

As a bonus, this year’s tour offers an exclusive look at the Leafy Dale building. The apartment complex and former hotel will soon reopen to tenants following an extensive renovation, with new features including a rooftop terrace.

The preview tour begins at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 20. The $75 ticket includes a cocktail party at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Greg Zanetos of preview sponsor Anthony-Thomas Candy Company, also known as Cocoa Manor.

The general tour is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday the 21st, and tickets are $15 in advance, $20 day of tour. These include access to a trolley shuttle bus for easy traveling between tour stops.

Advance discounted tickets are available online at tickets.shortnorthcivic.org. Day-of-tour tickets will be available at Spinelliʼs Deli, 767 Neil Ave.
